CTK & Cristo Rey Join Together for IGNITE! Christ the King Jesuit College Prep and Cristo Rey Jesuit High School embarked on a new endeavor this summer, the IGNITE! Social Justice Immersion project. 13 students from both schools spent five days reflecting on Catholic Social Teaching and how it is at work in the city of Chicago. During the week-long summer service project, the students began their immersion journey with reflection on ways our society alienates people who are low-income and ways they could do something about it. Led by Mr. Zundel and Mr. Gallmeier and faculty from Cristo Rey, the 13 students visited Misericordia Home, and Our Lady of Sorrows Parish to analyze the organizations efforts to respect life and dignity of the human person. Misericordia is home to 600+ adults and young people with developmental disabilities. Our students worked in the bakery, art rooms, and laundry of Misericordia, right along with the residents and volunteers. The immersion project ended with a Mass celebrated by Fr. Dave Mastrangelo, S.J. who reflected on their shared Gospel call to witness to and serve each other. Both the students and adult participants are looking forward to next year!
